Cleanings & Gum Health

Professional cleaning removes the plaque and hardened tartar that brushing cannot reach, and gum assessment catches inflammation while it is still reversible.

On the day

What to expect.

  1. Assessment of gum health, including the depth of the gum pockets.
  2. Removal of plaque and tartar above and below the gum line.
  3. Specific advice on the areas your brushing is missing.
  4. A recommended interval for your next clean.
Every mouth is different. This is the usual shape of the appointment — your dentist will tell you what applies to you before anything begins.

Questions

What people ask.

Why can't I just brush it off?

Plaque hardens into tartar within days, and once hardened a brush will not shift it. It then holds bacteria against the gum line, which is what drives gum disease.

My gums bleed. Should I brush less?

Usually the opposite. Bleeding generally signals inflammation from plaque, and that inflammation tends to settle once the area is cleaned properly. Raise it at your appointment.

Does a cleaning hurt?

Uncomfortable at worst for most people. If the gums are inflamed it can be tender — say so and the clinician will adjust.
