Root canal treatment addresses infection inside a tooth. The infected tissue is removed, the canals cleaned and sealed, and the tooth kept rather than extracted.
What happens on the day
- Freezing so that treatment is comfortable.
- Removal of infected tissue from inside the tooth.
- Cleaning and shaping of the canals.
- Sealing of the tooth, often followed later by a crown.
Common questions
Is it painful?
The tooth is frozen throughout. The pain people associate with root canals is usually the pain that sent them to the dentist, which the treatment removes.
One appointment or two?
Either, depending on the tooth, the number of canals and how much infection is present.
Why would I need a crown after?
The tooth has lost internal structure and becomes more brittle, particularly at the back of the mouth where chewing forces are highest.
